Organizations

Besides my teaching and research, I am active in the History of Science Society; I've gone to almost all of its annual meetings since I was in grad school, and I've served at various times on its council and on several of its committees, notably the Pfizer Award Committee, the Committee on Publications, and the Committee on Meetings and Programs. When the HSS met in Austin in 2004, I served as the local arrangements chair. I'm also a member of the Society for the History of Technology, the British Society for the History of Science, and the Forum on the History and Philosophy of Physics of the American Physical Society; I'm currently the chair-elect of the latter. Locally, I'm active in the University of Texas History of Science, Technology, the Environment, and Medicine Colloquium, which meets roughly every other Friday during the academic year. In 1988 I helped found the Lone Star History of Science Group, which seeks to bring together historians of science, technology, and medicine from across Texas; it has met each spring ever since, apart from a cancellation due to Covid in 2020. We held our 2021 and 2022 meetings via Zoom but were able to get back to meeting in person in April 2023. The longevity and conviviality of the Lone Star Group is no doubt traceable in large part to the fact that it is barred by its constitution from having any officers, by-laws, or dues. Anyone interested in joining the group (that is, in being added to its email list) should contact me at bjhunt@austin.utexas.edu.
